Hello,

We have reached the end of the Jump Start emails, but it's just the beginning of your social media engagement with HootSuite. Before we send you out on your own, we'll explain team collaboration tools.

Building Teams

On a Pro or Enterprise plan you can assemble a team to write status updates without sharing account passwords. Inversely, you can revoke social media account access to a team member as situations change. By doing so, you can assign messages to the most appropriate team member for follow-up.

1. To add a Team Member, hover over the Launch Bar and select Social Networks. Then choose a profile you own. Click the Add Team Member button and invite by entering their email address. You can also include a note if you like.

2. Once they've joined your team, you can assign messages to them. Click the pull down menu on the desired Tweet and choose Assign. Choose your Team Member and add a note if needed.

3. To see the results of the assignments, hover over the Launch Bar and choose Assignments. You can create a report based on profile and status to see the follow-up time and message.

TIP: Team Members can have Basic or Advanced status. Just click on their name and check the box to allow advanced members to invite others and manage more of the account.

Remember, the team collaboration tools are available in the HootSuite Pro and Enterprise plans, but even if you’re on the free Basic plan we think it will be helpful to know what’s possible down the road.

Hello,

It's time to begin measuring the success of your activities – from within HootSuite of course. Seeing the results of your campaigns, allows you to quickly adjust tactics and maximize the results of your efforts.

HootSuite offers a number of tools for tracking and analyzing stats, including Ow.ly – a built-in URL shortener for images and URLs.

For more advanced reporting options, the HootSuite dashboard comes complete with over 30 report 'modules' or Social Analytics functions that can be mixed and matched into customized reports. This will allow you to track various elements of your online activities directly from HootSuite, and fine tune your efforts to get the best possible results.

Report modules are on a points-based system, and more points can be purchased any time. There are also free Quick Analytics Reports that give you summary stats for Ow.ly, Facebook Insights and more.

Getting Started with Stats

1. To create a new report, hover over the Launch Bar and select Analytics. From here, click the "Create New Report" button from within Custom Analytics.

2. Then, you can select a template. Choose from several existing templates, or, to start from scratch click Custom Report.

3. Once a template is selected, you can begin customizing your report by adding Report Modules.

Reports are available on a points system, and the type of plan you're on will determine how many points you have. More points are available for purchase at any time.

Hello,

Next up in the JumpStart series, we have a few easy and powerful tools to round out your toolkit. Add RSS feeds and Twitter lists to your dashboard for a new way to broadcast messages and build your audience. Plus, we'll introduce the Hootlet, a little bookmarklet which allows you to quickly and socially share sites.

There are a few ways to use these tools so check the Help Desk for extra help as well as reviewing the handy tips below.

Hootlet - Our Secret Weapon

The Hootlet is a "bookmarklet" for creating a pre-populated message any webpage with a single click. Just drag the Hootlet from the Launch Bar to your browser's bookmark bar. When you get a to page you want to share, simply click the bookmark to pop open a small window with an automatically pre-shortens a link to the webpage. You can add text, attach images and schedule and/or send to one or multiple accounts.

Post from Feeds

HootSuite can send automatically send update from RSS/Atom feeds to any social profile – great for publicizing your blog posts or sharing your social bookmarks.

To auto-update your social channels, first hover over the Launch bar, then choose Settings and select RSS/Atom. Then paste in your feed url and select which social networks and your desired interval and HootSuite will send an update out each time your feed is updated.

Create Twitter Lists

Lists are a native Twitter feature to help you organize the people you are following from different parts of your social life. Lists can be public or private and can be used for any group you choose. For example, you can create lists for co-workers, best friends, hobby groups, brands, or fans of the same sports team.

1. To add an existing Twitter lists, click + Add Stream, choose the Lists tab and you'll see any lists you own or are subscribed to.

2. Don't have any lists? No problem, lists are easy to create. Just add a stream, choose lists and fill in the name, description and url fields plus select public or private.

3. For a fast way to manage your lists, hover over the Launch Bar and choose Contacts. Select the related Twitter profile to see followers and lists. Then, just drag and drop user avatars on top of the desired list.

My, how time flies! About a week has passed since you signed up for HootSuite and it's important to us that you're able to make the most out of this powerful tool.

Today's update covers a few ways to spread your messages far and wide. With HootSuite you can draft and schedule messages ahead of time, and there is also a Batch Scheduling option for those organizations who want to schedule up to 50 unique messages ahead of time. It can be tricky the first time, but we have Help Desk articles to get you started.

Sending a message is pretty easy, but if you want more, the Help Desk has detailed information to optimize your updates in order to reach a wider audience:

1. Use Status Updates
2. Schedule in HootSuite
3. Save a Status Update as a Draft
4. Send a Reply, ReTweet or Direct Mention

How to Update a Status:

1. Simply type a message in the text field, choose the social profiles you want to update, then click Send Now – you can also add images by clicking the paperclip or just drag and drop the file in the message box

2. Alternatively, you can schedule status updates to send later – simply click the calendar icon to choose a date and time, click Okay, and then click Schedule (we can even send an email to confirm)

3. For messages you send frequently, you can save message as a draft – just write the message, chose the social profiles and click the floppy disc icon to save – to use later, just click the arrow icon beside the floppy disc and choose your draft to populate the message box

A few more tips for Twitter: Reply to a Tweet, ReTweet or send a Direct Message by hovering your mouse over a Tweet and choosing the appropriate icons.

Hello,

Now that you know how to add social profiles, this "Jump Start" email will show you how to add streams for searching and monitoring your social profiles.

Streams are the columns in the HootSuite dashboard with continually updating messages from your social profiles. Streams can include any sort of social message stream plus searches for your brands and interests.

Check out the how-to articles from the Help Desk for detailed instructions or get started quick with the short instructions below.

Adding a New Stream:

1. Click "+ Add Streams," choose the column you'd like to create and click "Create Column"
2. Choose a social profile and what type of messages to display - for example: @mention, DMs, Facebook home feed etc.
3. Or choose the "Search" or "Keyword" tabs - enter some search terms to monitor for real time Twitter search

You can also add Twitter lists directly into a stream – and remember that you can have up to 10 streams per tab allowing lots of searches, lists and more.

Today's update shows you how to set up social networks in the HootSuite dashboard. You may have started this process with help from the Quick Start Guide, but we want to share a few more tips.

For starters, HootSuite supports several social networks and adding these accounts is easy. For step by step instructions, visit the help desk articles or get jump started right away with the simple instructions below:

Adding Social Network Profiles

1. First, hover over the Launch Bar at the far left of the your screen. Choose Settings, then Social Networks and click "Add Social Networks."
2. Then, select the social network from the pop up window and click "Add Now."
3. In the pop up window, click the button to login to your account.

You're done! Your social network will now appear as a dashboard tab.

HootSuite supports many social networks but if you have an idea for one you'd like to see, cast a vote at the Feature Request channel.

As we all learn about social media and inbound marketing and we teach others about it, having a resource that quickly and clearly explains all of the basic terms and applications is critically important.

Social Media Marketing Dictionary: 101 Terms to Know

A

Application Programing Interface (API) - An API is a documented interface that allows one software application to to interact with another application. An example of this is the Twitter API.

Avatar - An Avatar is an image or username that represents a person online within forums and social networks.

B

BackType - BackType is a social media analytics company that helps companies measure their social engagement. Previously the service started as a blog comment search engine.

Bit.ly - Bit.ly is a free URL shortening service that provides statistics for the links users share online. Bit.ly is popularly used to condense long URLs to make them easier to share on social networks such as Twitter.

Blip.TV - Blip.TV is a online video sharing site that provides a free and paid platform for individuals and companies who host an online video show.

Blog - Blog is a word that was created from two words: “web log”. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Blogger - Blogger is a free blogging platform owned by Google that allows individuals and companies to host and publish a blog typically on a subdomain. Example: yourblogname.blogspot.com

Blog Talk Radio - Blog Talk Radio is a free web application that allows users to host live online radio shows.

BoardReader - BoardReader is a free search engine that allows users to search for keywords only in posts and titles of online forums, a popular forum of social networking.

Boxee - Boxee is a social video application that allows users to watch online videos on their TVs and computers. Users can share and watch videos from a variety of online videos sources for free.

C

Chat - Chat can refer to any kind of communication over the Internet, but traditionally refers to one-to-one communication through a text-based chat application commonly referred to as instant messaging applications.

Collecta - Collecta is a real-time search engine that includes results from from blogs, microblogs, news feeds and photo sharing services as they are published.

Collective Intelligence - Collective Intelligence is a shared or group intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals and appears in consensus decision-making in social networks.

Comment - A comment is a response that is often provided as an answer of reaction to a blog post or message on a social network. Comments are a primary form of two-way communication on the social web.

Compete - Compete is a web-based application that offers users and businesses web analytics and enables people to compare and contrast the statistics for different websites over time.

Craigslist - Craigslist is a popular online commerce site in which users sell a variety of goods and services to other users. The service has been credited for causing the reduction of classified advertising in newspapers across the United States.

Creative Commons - Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. It provides free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination thereof.

D

Delicious - Delicious is a free online bookmarking service that lets users save website addresses publicly and privately online so that they can be accessed from any device connected to the Internet and shared with friends.

Digg - Digg is a social news website that allows members to submit and vote for articles. Articles with the most votes appear on the homepage of the site and subsequently are seen by the largest portion of the site’s membership as well as other visitors.

Disqus - Disqus is a comment system and moderation tool for your site. This service lets you add next-gen community management and social web integration to any site on any platform.

DocStoc - DocStoc is an online sharing service for documents. Users can view, upload, share and sell documents.

E

EventBrite - Eventbrite is a provider of online event management and ticketing services. Eventbrite is free if your event is free. If you sell tickets to your event, Eventbrite collects a fee per ticket.

F

Facebook - Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. Facebook is the largest social network in the world with more than 500 million users.

Firefox - Firefox is an open-source web browser. It has emerged as one of the most popular web browsers on the Internet and allows users to customize their browser through the use of third-party extensions.

Flash Mob - A flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails.

Flickr - Flickr is a social network based around online picture sharing. The service allows users to store photos online and then share them with others through profiles, groups, sets and other methods.

Forums - Also known as a message board, a forum is an online discussion site. It originated as the modern equivalent of a traditional bulletin board, and a technological evolution of the dialup bulletin board system.

Foursquare - Foursquare is a social network in which friends share their locations and connect with others in close physical proximity to each other. The service uses a system of digital badges to reward players who “checkin” to different types of locations.

G

Google Buzz - Google Buzz is a social networking and messaging tool from Google, designed to integrate into the company's web-based email program, Gmail. Users can share links, photos, videos, status messages and comments organized in "conversations" and visible in the user's inbox.

Google Chrome - Google Chrome is a free web browser produced by Google that fully integrates into its online search system as well as other applications.

Google Documents - Google Documents is a group of web-based office applications that includes tools for word processing, presentations and spreadsheet analysis. All documents are stored and edited online and allow multiple people to collaborate on a document in real-time.

Google Wave - Google Wave is a collaboration tool developed by Google as a next-generation solution to e-mail communication. A wave is a live, shared space on the web where people can discuss and work together using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

Gowalla - Gowalla is a social network in which friends share their locations and connect with others in close psychical proximity to each other.

Groundswell - A social trend in which people use technologies to get the things they need from each other, rather than from traditional institutions like corporations. (Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff, Groundswell, pg. 9)

H

Hashtag - A hashtag is a tag used on the social network Twitter as a way to annotate a message. A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a “#”. Example: #yourhashtag. Hashtags are commonly used to show that a tweet, a Twitter message, is related to an event or conference.

hi5 - hi5 is a social network focused on the youth market. It is a social entertainment destination, with a focus on delivering a fun and entertainment-driven social experience online to users around the world.

HootSuite - HootSuite is a web-based Twitter client. With HootSuite, you can manage multiple Twitter profiles, pre-schedule tweets, and view metrics.

HTML - HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a programing language for web pages. Think of HTML as the brick-and-mortar of pages on the web -- it provides content and structure while CSS supplies style. HTML has changed over the years and it is on the cusp of its next version: HTML5.

Inbound Marketing - Inbound marketing is a style of marketing that essentially focuses on getting found by customers. This sense is related to relationship marketing and Seth Godin's idea of permission marketing. David Meerman Scott recommends that marketers "earn their way in" (via publishing helpful information on a blog etc.) in contrast to outbound marketing where they used to have to "buy, beg, or bug their way in" (via paid advertisements, issuing press releases in the hope they get picked up by the trade press, or paying commissioned sales people, respectively).

Instant Messaging - Instant messaging (IM) is a form of real-time direct text-based communication between two or more people. More advanced instant messaging software clients also allow enhanced modes of communication, such as live voice or video calling.

Joomla - Joomla is an content management system (CMS) which enables users to build websites and online applications.

K

Kyte - Kyte is an online and mobile video application that provides video hosting and stream for both recorded and live video feeds.

L

Lifecasting - Lifecasting is a continual broadcast of events in a person's life through digital media. Typically, lifecasting is transmitted through the Internet and can involve wearable technology.

Like - A “Like” is an action that can be made by a Facebook user. Instead of writing a comment for a message or a status update, a Facebook user can click the "Like" button as a quick way to show approval and share the message.

Link Building - Link building is an aspect of search engine optimization in which website owners develop strategies to generate links to their site from other websites with the hopes of improving their search engine ranking. Blogging has emerged as a popular method of link building.

LinkedIn - LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking. As of June 2010, LinkedIn had more than 70 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide

Lurker - A lurker online is a person who reads discussions on a message board, newsgroup, social network, or other interactive system, but rarely or never participates in the discussion.

M

Mashup - A content mashup contains multiple types of media drawn from pre-existing sources to create a new work. Digital mashups allow individuals or businesses to create new pieces of content by combining multiple online content sources.

MySpace - MySpace is a social networking website owned by News Corporation. MySpace became the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006 and was overtaken internationally by its main competitor, Facebook, in April 2008.

MyPunchbowl - MyPunchbowl.com is a social network that facilitates party planning and provides members with ideas, invitations, favors, gift registries, photo/video sharing, and more.

N

News Reader - A news reader allows users to aggregate articles from multiple websites into one place using RSS feeds. The purpose of these aggregators is to allow for a faster and more efficient consumption of information.

Newsvine - Newsvine is a social news site similar to Digg in which users submit and vote for stories to be shared and read by other members of the community.

O

Opera - Opera is an open-source web browser. While not as popular as Firefox, Opera is used as the default browser on some gaming systems and mobile devices.

Orkut - Orkut is a social networking website that is owned and operated by Google. The website is named after its creator, Google employee Orkut Büyükkökten. Although Orkut is less popular in the United States than competitors Facebook and MySpace, it is one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil.

P

Pandora - Pandora is a social online radio station that allows users to create stations based on their favorite artists and types of music.

Permalink - A permalink is an address or URL of a particular post within a blog or website.

Podcast - A podcast, or non-streamed webcast, is a series of digital media files, either audio or video, that are released episodically and often downloaded through an RSS feed..

Posterous - Posterous is a blogging and content syndication platform that allows users to post content from any computer or mobile device by sending an e-mail.

PostRank - PostRank monitors and collects social engagement related to content around the web. Essentially it helps publishers understand which type of content promotes sharing on the social web.

Q

Qik - Qik is an online video streaming service that lets users to stream video live from their mobile phones to the web.

Quantcast - Quantcast provides website traffic and demographics for websites. The tool is primarily used by online advertisers looking to target specific demographics.

R

Real-Time Search - Real-time search is the method of indexing content being published online into search engine results with virtually no delay.

Reddit - Reddit is similar to Digg and Newsvine. It is a social news site that is built upon a community of users who share and comment on stories.

S

Scribd - Scribd turns document formats such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint into a web document for viewing and sharing online.

Search Engine Optimization - Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via unpaid or organic search traffic.

Facebook Privacy: Is The FTC Going Too Far or Not Far Enough?

Will product innovation suffer?

As you may know, Facebook settled privacy charges with the FTC this week. Under the agreement, Facebook is barred from making misrepresentations about the privacy or security of consumers’ personal data, required to obtain user consent before making privacy changes, required to prevent others from accessing a user’s material no more than 30 days after the use has deleted their account, required to maintain a privacy program to address privacy risks associated with the development and management of new and existing products, and required to be audited every 2 years for 20 years to make sure they’re living up to all of this.

It’s that part about the development and management of new and existing products that has led to some questioning just how much government intervention is actually going to affect Facebook going forward.
Lance Ulanoff, Editor-in-Chief of social media news site Mashable, goes so far as to suggest the possibility that the FTC just ruined Facebook. “You don’t think there’ll be damage from an agreement that ostensibly promises two-decades’-worth of governmental privacy policy oversight for the world’s largest social network? Sorry, but I have to disagree.”
He goes on to make the case that the whole thing could have huge implications for Facebook’s internal processes, particularly with the lawyers the company has appointed to the positions of Chief Privacy Officer, Policy and Chief Privacy Officer, Products.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed them in a massive blog post response to the FTC’s announcement:
Erin Egan will become Chief Privacy Officer, Policy. Erin recently joined Facebook after serving as a partner and co-chair of the global privacy and data security practice of Covington & Burling, the respected international law firm. Throughout her career, Erin has been deeply involved in legislative and regulatory efforts to address privacy, data security, spam, spyware and other consumer protection issues. Erin will lead our engagement in the global public discourse and debate about online privacy and ensure that feedback from regulators, legislators, experts and academics from around the world is incorporated into Facebook’s practices and policies.
Michael Richter will become Chief Privacy Officer, Products. Michael is currently Facebook’s Chief Privacy Counsel on our legal team. In his new role, Michael will join our product organization to expand, improve and formalize our existing program of internal privacy review. He and his team will work to ensure that our principles of user control, privacy by design and transparency are integrated consistently into both Facebook’s product development process and our products themselves.

These two positions will further strengthen the processes that ensure that privacy control is built into our products and policies.
It’s that last sentence which lies at the root of Ulanoff’s point. This could have tremendous effects on Facebook’s ability to get out new products, at least in the manner in which they were intended.
It’s certainly a good thing for Facebook to protect the privacy of users as they intended, but as Zuckerberg pointed out, they’ve released tons of tools and resources for giving users more control.
“Overall, I think we have a good history of providing transparency and control over who can see your information,” he said. “That said, I’m the first to admit that we’ve made a bunch of mistakes. In particular, I think that a small number of high profile mistakes, like Beacon four years ago and poor execution as we transitioned our privacy model two years ago, have often overshadowed much of the good work we’ve done.”
He also reminded us of a number of specific things Facebook has done in the past 18 months to give users more control:

• An easier way to select your audience when making a new post

• Inline privacy controls on all your existing posts

• The ability to review tags made by others before they appear on your profile

• Friend lists that are easier to create and that maintain themselves automatically

• A new groups product for sharing with smaller sets of people

• A tool to view your profile as someone else would see it

• Tools to ensure your information stays secure like double login approval

• Mobile versions of your privacy controls

• An easy way to download all your Facebook data

• A new apps dashboard to control what your apps can access

• A new app permission dialog that gives you clear control over what an app can do anytime you add one

• Many more privacy education resources

“In my opinion, the FTC agreement is not only bad for Facebook, but bad for its users too,” says iEntry CEO and WebProNews publisher Rich Ord. “Government regulation of the largest social network on the planet cannot be good.”
Still, others feel that the government did not go far enough. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (or EPIC), which is credited as an organization that brought the Facebook issues to the FTC’s attention, would have rather they “restore users’ privacy settings to pre-2009 levels.”
The FTC’s complaint lists a handful of instances in which it says “Facebook allegedly made promises it did not keep”:
In December 2009, Facebook changed its website so certain information that users may have designated as private – such as their Friends List – was made public. They didn’t warn users that this change was coming, or get their approval in advance.
Facebook represented that third-party apps that users’ installed would have access only to user information that they needed to operate. In fact, the apps could access nearly all of users’ personal data – data the apps didn’t need.
Facebook told users they could restrict sharing of data to limited audiences – for example with “Friends Only.” In fact, selecting “Friends Only” did not prevent their information from being shared with third-party applications their friends used.
Facebook had a “Verified Apps” program & claimed it certified the security of participating apps. It didn’t.
Facebook promised users that it would not share their personal information with advertisers. It did.
Facebook claimed that when users deactivated or deleted their accounts, their photos and videos would be inaccessible. But Facebook allowed access to the content, even after users had deactivated or deleted their accounts.
Facebook claimed that it complied with the U.S.- EU Safe Harbor Framework that governs data transfer between the U.S. and the European Union. It didn’t.

Uno de los principales avances de Internet en los últimos años ha sido contar con una conexión de banda ancha en los hogares mediante tarifas planas de datos, así como en movilidad a precios asequibles, para todos los bolsillos. Podemos así estar en permanente conexión a la Red y utilizar herramientas y plataformas web desde cualquier parte, hasta tal punto que la conexión es un servicio que se utiliza de manera cotidiana, de igual forma que el agua corriente o la electricidad. Pero, ¿qué sucede cuando perdemos la conexión? En algunas plataformas, esto no tiene por qué ser un problema.

Gracias a ciertas tecnologías, que permiten una mayor complejidad en el diseño de las aplicaciones que se utilizan desde el navegador, es posible realizar muchas de nuestras tareas ofimáticas si se prescinde del escritorio del ordenador, que se usará ocasionalmente para guardar ciertos archivos. Es así como aplicaciones hasta ahora usadas de forma habitual en programas que se ejecutaban en nuestro portátil, o nuestro sobremesa, se reemplazan por servicios web. Un caso paradigmático es el de Google Docs, pero también ha optado por esta alternativa Microsoft con su Microsoft Office Live.

No obstante, en ocasiones no es posible contar con conexión a Internet, al estar dentro de un avión, en transportes públicos sin señal, o bien por encontrarnos situados de forma temporal en espacios abiertos sin cobertura. En ese momento, muchos de nuestros servicios y plataformas más imprescindibles dejan de funcionar y la mayoría de sus funcionalidades no están disponibles. Por tanto, nos vemos limitados a trabajar con los elementos que tengamos en nuestro disco duro.

Para solucionar este inconveniente, algunas de las principales empresas que prestan servicio web cuentan con características off line. Estas permiten a los usuarios no interrumpir el uso de sus principales aplicaciones por el hecho de estar desconectados, e incluso, acceder a sus últimos documentos sin necesidad de contar con un canal de datos que les comunique con el servidor.

Una opción por defecto en HTML 5

Google, para sus servicios de correo electrónico, calendario y documentos, todos ellos on line, comenzó a utilizar hace unos años una tecnología propia denominada Gears. Esta permitía mantener el uso de estos servicios sin estar conectado a Internet. Sin embargo, el buscador ha reemplazado no hace mucho esta tecnología por una nueva versión de sus servicios basada en el estándar HTML 5.

Gracias a la actualización de HTML, la mayoría de los servicios de Google tienen una alternativa para trabajar en desconexión. Al usar Gmail, el servicio de correo web, se cuenta con una versión móvil para dispositivos portátiles, tabletas y smartphones, que incorpora la opción off line de modo predeterminado. Tan solo hay que acceder a la dirección de Gmail.com desde el navegador de estos dispositivos. Es decir, el usuario, sin necesidad de activar nada, podrá acceder de forma desconectada a sus últimos correos almacenados y otros servicios a los que previamente hubiera accedido en estado conectado.

En el caso de utilizar Gmail desde un ordenador, una extensión para el navegador Chrome realiza la misma función de uso off line que la versión móvil. De igual manera, para emplear el sistema de documentos on line Google Docs de forma desconectada hay dos opciones. Por un lado, los usuarios que usen Google Docs desde un ordenador pueden instalar la extensión para Chrome. Esta extensión permite tanto acceder a los documentos como salvarlos y modificarlos.

Otra opción es utilizar la función de acceder de forma off line a Google Docs desde el navegador, simplemente tras activar esta funcionalidad en la configuración del servicio. Sin embargo, con esta alternativa solo es posible visualizar en modo lectura los documentos. Además, la misma no está recomendada para emplearse en ordenadores públicos o compartidos, debido a que la información almacenada se guarda en el disco duro de forma abierta.

En un entorno más profesional, Microsoft provee a su suite ofimática Office de soluciones empresariales para poder trabajar en los documentos en constante sincronización con servidor centralizado y con acceso desde todo tipo de dispositivos, ya sean móviles, tabletas, portátiles u ordenadores de sobremesa. Para ello, vende su paquete de instalación en servidores Cloud Essentials Pack, que gestiona las sincronizaciones.

Además Cloud Essentials Pack -dentro del entorno Office 360, que incluye Microsoft Office Live- permite trabajar sin conexión, tras salvarse el documento en la última comunicación con el servidor, de modo que al volver a recuperar la cobertura, en caso de móviles, o la toma wifi, en el de redes fijas, se realizará una nueva sincronización de forma automática. El usuario no notará en principio la diferencia entre estar o no conectado.

Servicios para leer archivos más tarde sin conexión

Uno de los problemas más habituales con que nos encontramos al navegar por Internet es la falta de tiempo para leer toda la información que ansiamos. Para ayudarnos a gestionar la gran cantidad de artículos y páginas web que tenemos en cola para su lectura, existen algunos servicios on line que dejan guardar una versión en caché de la página, o solo del texto de la misma, para leerlo mas adelante sin necesidad de disponer de conexión a Internet.

Servicios como Read Later, Instapaper o Readmeo están orientados a permitir a los usuarios guardar copia de todos los artículos de su interés para una posterior lectura más reposada, con independencia de si cuentan o no con conexión. Ademas, la última versión del sistema operativo para dispositivos móviles de Apple, iOS5, cuenta con una nueva característica, llamada "lista de lectura", en el navegador Safari para leer más tarde los artículos seleccionados por el usuario. Aún así, por desgracia, esta lectura no se puede hacer en modo desconectado. Lo que sí incorpora iOS es un sistema de correo que permite escribir un mensaje cuando se está sin cobertura, pero que se enviará en cuanto esta se recupere.

Guía para crear un formulario o encuesta en Google Docs

Una de las funciones más prácticas pero menos conocidas de Google Docs, es su herramienta para crear formularios o encuestas que, posteriormente, pueden ser publicadas en el sitio web o blog del usuario. Además de permitir personalizarlo, tiene aplicaciones para medir las respuestas.

¿Cómo hacerlo?

Para comenzar, el usuario debe ingresar y loggearse en Google Docs. En la viñeta “Create” hay que seleccionar “Form” o Formulario, con lo que se abrirá una nueva ventana que dará acceso al llenado de los parámetros para la encuesta o formulario.

Lo siguiente Lo que sigue es rellenar las preguntas y seleccionar el tipo de respuesta, donde aparecen opciones comunes como respuestas en texto, un párrafo, opción múltiple, checkboxes y otras. Es más, si se opta por la alternativa Multiple Choice es posible separarla en otro formulario; con ello se obtendrá un sondeo más detallado.

Respuestas El sistema ofrece la posibilidad de cambiar el tema del formulario, además de enviarlo por mail y obtener el código para publicar la encuesta en el sitio web o blog del usuario. Asimismo, Google Docs permite acceder a una gráfica con los porcentajes de las respuestas o, incluso más, traspasarlas a una planilla de cálculo.

Si necesitamos compartir con otras personas archivos grandes a través de internet, tenemos cientos de servicios de alojamiento gratuito, muchos de los cuales ya les he compartido en este blog.

Pero lamentablemente este tipo de sistemas tiene varios inconvenientes: primero nuestros archivos son alojados en un servidor, con los problemas de seguridad que esto puede acarrear y segundo, la transferencia se hace en dos partes, primero subimos el archivo y luego la persona debe descargarlo a su PC.

Por suerte existen soluciones mucho más eficientes y seguras como las que les traigo hoy. JustBeamit es un excelente servicio de transferencia vía P2P que nos permite compartir fácil y rápidamente todo tipo de archivos.

Lo que más me gustó de esta aplicación es que no necesitamos descargar ningún programa a nuestra PC, sólo ingresamos al sitio, seleccionamos el archivo que queremos compartir y por último compartimos la URL con la persona a la que se lo vamos a enviar.

Cuando nuestro amigo, familiar o colega ingresa a esta URL, se realiza una conexión P2P y comienza la transferencia del archivo.

JustBeamit es sin duda mucho más fácil, rápido y seguro que otros sistema para compartir archivos que he probado. Solo pruébenlo y me cuentan.

Una jugada maestra o una bajada de pantalones?

Quizá el nuevo proyecto en el que se han embarcado dos de los fundadores de The Pirate Bay tengo
muchísimo más de lo primero que de lo segundo, aunque pudiera parecer lo contrario.
Bayfiles es la respuesta al tremendo éxito actual de los cyberlockers como Megaupload o RapidShare con
ligeras diferencias que podrían posicionarlo en un híbrido ganador.
Una mezcla entre estos servicios de alojamiento con características de servicios en la nube tipo Dropbox.
Eso sí, a partir de ahora se respetan los derechos de autor y los avisos de infracción del copyright.

El cambio es notable. Desde ese 2003, año en el que lanzaran el tracker de BitTorrent más famoso de la historia,
hasta ahora, han pasado muchas cosas.
Principalmente varios de los fundadores han tenido juicios por problemas de infracción con los derechos de autor.
Quizá apoyados en las circunstancias del pasado han dado una vuelta de tuerca a esos orígenes, cambiando
el BitTorrent por los populares servicios de alojamiento actuales.

Tal y como cuentan ellos mismos, Bayfiles es una solución a los usuarios en
la búsqueda de una opción más confiable donde compartir y almacenar archivos:

El BitTorrent está cada vez más limitado. El almacenamiento y las transferencias por Bayfiles también van a poder preservar la privacidad de los usuarios. Tienen la ventaja de que los usuarios podrán estar seguros de que el contenido se mantiene, lo cual es importante para las copias de seguridad personales.

Otra de las principales características será el cambio de tercio respecto al copyright. Bayfiles respetará la DMCA y por tanto tendrá muy en cuenta los avisos sobre infracción de los derechos de autor. Se vigilará aquellos contenidos que violen estos términos e incluso se deshabitará las cuentas de los reincidentes. Los paquetes disponibles en su lanzamiento serán:

Gratis: Aquellos usuarios que no deseen pagar tendrán un límite para compartir de hasta 250MB.
Miembros regulares: 500 MB (tienes que registrarte)
Miembros Premium: Ilimitado con capacidad para subir archivos de hasta 5GB. Aquí habrá que pagar con unos precios que van de los 5 euros por un mes a los 45 euros por un año.

Ahora queda la pregunta, -podrá rivalizar con su propia creación?
El servicio parece ofrecer todas las características actuales de un cyberlockers con
algunas novedades pero los usuarios de BitTorrent podrían no ver con buenos ojos este cambio de servicios.
Por otra parte es innegable el éxito y el trasvase de usuarios en los últimos años a este tipo de sistemas en detrimento de las clientes BitTorrent. En cuanto a los términos sobre las infracciones de copyright, los fundadores de The Pirate Bay podrían haber encontrado el servicio que los libera de cualquier acción contra ellos.

Flowplayer Installation A step-by-step guide to showing videos in your web pages

Installation

This document is for people who want the dirty details. If you want to configure and install your player without reading too much docs please enter Flowplayer Setup.

With Flowplayer anyone can play videos no matter what their background is. We assume you want to play videos to users or visitors of your web site. If you only want to play videos locally, see the end of this document where local installation is discussed.

Basically there are the following steps to take to have video on your web site:

Have a web server, or have your web site hosted
Place the Flowplayer distribution files on the server
Place your video files on the server
Include Flowplayer in your web pages

The web server

The web server is a computer connected to the internet that handles requests for pages from the internet. In its simplest form it only sends pages that are stored as files on the hard disk of the web server. More complex web servers also run programs, such as a user registration application, that interacts with the web site's users.

For Flowplayer you only need the simple form. If you have your web site hosted then this is important to know because there will be no extra costs for installing and running programs on the web server. Most people and many smaller companies have their website hosted so it is always available and they don't need to bother with system administration and operations.

Video is a serious bandwidth hugger. Bandwidth is the number of bits per second you send. High quality videos require many bits per second to be sent (full HD quality is 8 mega-bit per second) and many videos sent simultaneously also means high bandwidth is required. Not all hosting providers can guarantee they can always send enough bits. Together with delays elsewhere on the internet, your users might sometimes receive chunky video. If you have only occasional video in your web pages, then you will be fine with a simple (hosted) server and you can go to next step. But if you want to get serious about serving videos then here are some interesting possibilities, which Flowplayer fully supports.

Flowplayer distribution

You need to download the Flowplayer distribution and place the following files in the zip file on you web server (so not the zip file itself). Choose an easily remembered place as you will place a path to these files later in your web pages:

flowplayer-3.2.7.swf, the player;
flowplayer.controls-3.2.5.swf, the optional control bar;
flowplayer-3.2.6.min.js, the api.

That is all. Flowplayer is now installed on your web server.

When you download Flowplayer, you must choose between the free and commercial versions. The free version always displays the Flowplayer logo; with the commercial version you can display your own logo and further brand the player. We suggest that you start with the free version because it contains all of the same features as the commercial one does.

After you have downloaded the package, you need to decompress it with any of several programs available, for example, 7-Zip, WinRAR, or WinZip. Decompressing the file should result in a single folder called "flowplayer". The quickest way to test your installation is to copy this folder to your web server root and point your browser to the following location:

http://your.server.com/flowplayer/example/index.html

If everything is working properly, a video playback should start.

Place video files on your web server

We assume you have video files available already and you want to play them. To make them available, you must place them on your web site so your web pages can refer to them. How exactly to upload files to your web server depends on the server and the hosting company, but a common way is to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer the video files from your home or office computer to the web server. There are many good and free FTP clients available. A nice one is WinSCP that lets you drag and drop files from your computer to the server.

Note that Flowplayer does not support all video formats. Flowplayer essentially supports all formats supported by Adobe Flash, as Flowplayer is a manager for a basic Adobe Flash player. See here for a discussion of video formats and conversion.

Include Flowplayer in your web pages

To have your web pages play videos with Flowplayer, you must embed Flowplayer in those pages. For each page there are the following steps:

Include file flowplayer-3.2.6.min.js in the web page
Load the player with one JavaScript statement
Place the link to your video file in a href

Step 1: To include file flowplayer-3.2.6.min.js in the web page you place the following tag in the HEAD section of your web page:

Step 2: To place the link to your video file in the web page, the simplest way is to use the following A tag on your web page. The video will automatically play there:

Step 3: Finally, to load the player on the A tag just described, you place the following script in your page, following the A tag:

This minimal way to show video is discussed in more detail in the minimal installation demo. The demos page has many more examples of installing and customizing Flowplayer.

What is next?

If you have installed Flowplayer and it is working, you may want to do more advanced things. Then there are the following topics for you to study:

Configuration: All aspects of Flowplayer can be customized to your liking. The key to that is the configuration. In the examples on this page the configuration is not used; the default behavior is just fine. But you can provide a third argument to the flowplayer() function that can contain a lot of information to tell Flowplayer how to behave. With the configuration you can change the background color, have a different control bar, place a clock on the screen, have a splash image displayed, load playlists, have overlays and many more options. See the section on configuration for that and see the demos.
JavaScript API: With the configuration you can customize Flowplayer to your liking, but that is static, that is, you cannot change it after the player has been loaded. If you want to control the behavior of Flowplayer after it has been loaded, you must use the functions of the JavaScript API. For example, in interactive learning you can tell the video to pause at a specific point and launch a question page or information page. The use of the API by end users (you) is simple in nature and you only require a basic JavaScript knowledge. See the API documentation.

Local Installation

A local installation is where you run Flowplayer and your videos from your local hard disk.

The local installation works just as the installation for a web server; you place the distribution files on your hard disk, have your video files and embed the player in a web page from where you show your local videos.

There is just one thing different and that is the security settings of Flash. Normally Flash won't run videos from your hard disk and won't run the Flowplayer player object from your hard disk. So you must tell Flash it can trust your video location and trust the Flowplayer object. You do that by clicking this link which sends you to the Flash web site where your security settings are displayed and where you can change them to allow the locations on your hard disk. (Note: your security settings are stored local by Flash and are not stored at the Adobe or Macromedia website; it is just that the software to manage your settings run there.) In the panel you can select files or directories to trust. It is advised to allow the directory where your video files are stored and where the Flowplayer .swf objects are stored.

Is Your Website Ready For the Coming Tablet Explosion?

If the vast majority of analysts and pundits are to be believed, 2011 will be the year of the tablet, and the popular adoption of the devices won't stop there. In a recent report, Forrester predicted that tablet sales could quadruple from 2010 to 2015, leading to a surge in tablet-based e-commerce and chipping away at the amount of Web traffic coming from PC's.

Many site owners are already seeing a huge uptick in users browsing from tablets, and that upward trend will continue. Is your company's Website ready for these visitors?

Test Your Site on a Tablet

Using your own site on a tablet computer is the only way to get an accurate idea of what other users experience when they browse your site from such a device. The iPad runs a modified version of Safari, so if your Website works in that browser on desktops, it's probably fine on the iPad, but there's no guarantee. Weird issues with the layout may crop up out of nowhere. A JavaScript file could misfire.

Don't own an iPad or another tablet computer yet? Borrow one. Walk down to the Apple Store if you have to. At the very least, check to make sure your site's design and functionality are intact.

If you're desperate, you could even download Apple's iOS SDK, which comes with a desktop iPad simulator. There are a few Web-based simulators, but these are not reliable, because they are still using your desktop browser's engine to render the site.

Simplify the Layout

Even if your desktop site's design renders properly on tablets, that doesn't mean the battle is won. If simplicity is important in standard Web design, it's even more critical in designing for the iPad and similar devices. As a rule of thumb, strip out any elements of a page's layout that are not absolutely essential. Consider dropping that three-column layout for two columns. In many cases, cleaning up your site's design for the benefit of tablet browsers will have the added advantage of making the desktop browsing experience better.

Keep in mind some of the unique features of the tablet form factor. Users swipe and touch rather than scrolling and clicking. They can turn the device on its side and the browser will flip accordingly. You can use CSS media query declarations to adapt your site's design depending on the device's orientation. You could develop a different design entirely for tablet users or simply make your site's user experience one that meets desktops and tablets halfway.

Ditch the Flash

This one almost goes without saying, but if you haven't rethought that Flash-based navigation menu or site introduction, now is the time to scrap it. Apple has made clear its stance on Flash, which will probably never be support by iOS. While Android does support Flash, so far the experience of trying to load Flash content on Android devices has not been impressive.

No matter where you stand on the mobile Flash debate, it's hard to deny that more open standards like HTML5 and JavaScript can accomplish most of what Flash does. And while the Flash experience on Android may improve over time, Apple's iPad is overwhelmingly dominant in this space for the time being, so we have to play by their rules, to some extent.

Check Your Form Fields

One aspect of a desktop site that's worth keeping a close eye on is its Web forms. Whether they're used for a simple contact form, newsletter sign-up or an e-commerce shopping cart, forms are an important part of the user experience, especially for business sites. Broken or poorly formatted form fields can lead to frustration for users, who will abandon that sign-up form or shopping cart without a second thought.

To see what the experience is like, try filling out the forms on your site from at least one tablet, preferably an iPad since that's what most people are using at this point. Do the fields render clearly? Is the process tedious? If there any form fields that are not absolutely necessary, get rid of them. For formatting issues, use CSS to tweak the appearance of form fields. If it becomes necessary, you may want to consider looking at a third party form builder like Wufoo, which also makes customizing the design of Web forms a breeze.

Make the User Interface App-Like

One of the icons I tap most frequently on my iPad's home screen is not for a native application at all, but rather the mobile Web version of Gmail, which looks and feels a lot like an iOS app. Google has done an especially good job of adapting their existing Web services to the mobile and tablet form factors, and they do so using HTML5 and JavaScript.

If your technical resources and budget allow for it, consider building a tablet-specific version of your site that utilizes some of the more app-like interface elements like subtle animations and a navigation that responds to finger-swiping. El Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011, celebrado la semana pasada en las Vegas, fue el lugar donde se ratificó el auge de las tabletas en el mundo.

Allí el show se lo llevaron dispositivos de formato tridimensional para el hogar, algunos smartphones de cuarta generación y más de 80 modelos de tabletas, además de otras novedades tecnológicas presentadas por las marcas más importantes en el mundo de la tecnología. La única gran ausente fue Apple.

Sin lugar a dudas fue el año de las tabletas, y la tableta Xoom de Motorola fue elegida por el jurado del evento, como el mejor gadget del CES 2011.

Aunque, claro está, este galardón obtenido no es gratuito. Porque este dispositivo posee una pantalla de alta resolución, de 10 pulgadas; puede reproducir video y contenidos con Adobe Flash Player; cuenta con dos cámaras con capacidad para grabar videos en alta definición (HD) y Android Honeycomb, el nuevo sistema Android 3.0 especial para "tablets".

Además, los expertos añadieron la facilidad en el manejo de este dispositivo, autonomía e integración de aplicaciones, su rendimiento como consola de juegos con una pantalla de 1280Ã800 y con un giroscopio integrado, barómetro, brújula electrónica, acelerómetro e iluminación de adaptable para los nuevos tipos de aplicaciones. para merecer el anhelado premio en esta feria tecnológica.

Se espera que este dispositivo esté disponible durante el primer trimestre de este año.

De igual forma en el mercado de las "tablets" la oferta es amplia e interesante y apenas comienza: marcas tan importantes como Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, Panasonic y Toshiba también sorprendieron al mundo con sus tabletas.

De todas maneras, en el asunto de las tabletas la última palabra aún no esta dicha, porque muchos de los modelos de "tablets" exhibidos en el CES son, por ahora, prototipos sin fecha de lanzamiento y no hay que olvidar que Apple fue el gran ausente en esta feria tecnológica.
